AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana, a Healthy Louisiana Medicaid managed care health plan and part of the AmeriHealth Caritas Family of Companies, has once again been awarded the Multicultural Health Care Distinction by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana achieved the maximum possible score in each of the program’s four categories.

Multicultural Health Care (MHC) recognizes organizations that lead the market in providing culturally and linguistically sensitive services and working to reduce health care disparities. The MHC program evaluates how well an organization complies with the standards for the following areas: Collection of race/ethnicity and language data; Provision of language assistance; Cultural responsiveness; and Quality improvement of culturally and linguistically appropriate services, and reduction of health care disparities.

“This achievement is a reflection of our health plan’s work to help achieve positive health outcomes across Louisiana,” said AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana Market President Kyle Viator. “Louisiana’s racial, ethnic, and religious diversity is one of many things that make our state special. It’s important to us that health care services provided to our members and communities effectively address multicultural needs and issues that can lead to health disparities.”

Health Equity programming at AmeriHealth Caritas Louisiana is supported across departments and developed by a workgroup dedicated to improving member health outcomes. Health Equity, Louisiana Style (HELS) implements interventions based on root-cause analysis and evidence-based approaches to achieve improved and sustained member health outcomes through targeted programming based on the cultural and linguistic characteristics of member populations in need of additional health plan support.

“Cultural competency is crucial to providing high quality health care,” said NCQA President Margaret E. O’Kane. “Organizations achieving Multicultural Health Care Distinction are leaders in closing the ethnic and racial disparities gap, and NCQA commends them for their dedication.”
